Questions, answered.
The things people ask most about Hazel. Can't find yours? Search below, or ask on GitHub.
The basics
Is Hazel really free?
Yes. No ads, no subscription, no paid version and nothing locked. Hazel is open source, and it's kept going by people who choose to support it.
Why isn't Hazel on the Play Store?
Google doesn't allow apps that download from YouTube on the Play Store. Hazel is available from GitHub Releases and F-Droid instead. Those are the only official sources.
Which phones does it work on?
Any Android phone or tablet running Android 7 or newer. On GitHub, the file with arm64-v8a in its name suits almost every phone. The other files are for older or unusual devices.
Which websites can I download from?
More than a thousand, including YouTube, YouTube Music, Instagram, TikTok, X, Reddit, Facebook, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Vimeo and Twitch. The full list is here.
Is there an iPhone or computer version?
No. Hazel is made for Android only.
Can I change the language or theme?
Yes. Hazel follows your phone's language and comes in ten languages. Change it in More, Language. Dark and light themes and the accent colour are in More, Appearance.
How do I update Hazel?
Open More, Software update. The first row checks for a new version of Hazel itself. If you installed from F-Droid, updates come through the F-Droid app instead.
Does Hazel work without internet?
Downloading needs a connection, but everything you have saved plays offline in any player. Converting a video you already have to audio works offline too.
Downloading
How do I save just the music from a video?
In the download sheet, switch to the Audio tab before you tap Download. You can choose the format there, and Hazel adds the cover art and title for you.
Can I download a whole playlist or channel?
Yes. Paste the playlist or channel link and tap Download all. You can still change the settings for any single item first. See Playlists in the guide.
What's the fastest way to save something I'm watching?
Tap Share in the app you're watching in and pick Hazel. A download sheet opens right over that app, set to your usual quality. Tap Download and keep watching.
Can I save only part of a video?
Yes. Tap Cut in the download sheet and choose the start and end on the preview.
Do downloads continue if I close the app?
Yes. They keep running in the background, and you can pause or cancel them from the notification. If your phone stops them anyway, allow unrestricted battery use in More, Background downloads.
Can I make Hazel wait for Wi-Fi?
Yes. Turn on Wi-Fi only in More, Downloads. Downloads then wait until you're on Wi-Fi. A download that has already started won't be cut off halfway.
Can I record a live stream?
Yes, from its very start. For a premiere that hasn't begun, Hazel can wait and download it as soon as it goes live.
Can I get subtitles?
Yes. Tap Subtitles in the download sheet and pick the languages. They can be added into the video, saved as separate files next to it, or both.
It says Waiting for Wi-Fi. Why?
Wi-Fi only is turned on in More, Downloads, and you are on mobile data. The download starts by itself as soon as you are back on Wi-Fi, or you can turn the setting off.
Can I turn a video I already have into music?
Yes. More, Offline convert video to audio picks a video from your phone and saves the sound as an audio file. Nothing is uploaded; it all happens on your phone.
Files and storage
Where are my downloads saved?
Music goes to Download/Hazel/Audio and video to Download/Hazel/Video, where any music or gallery app finds them. You can also open them from the library in Hazel.
Can I save to my SD card?
Yes. Open More, Downloads, tap Audio or Video, and choose your SD card. Music and video can each go to a different place. Downloads going to the card also work on the card, so they don't fill up your phone along the way. See the guide for the steps.
What happens if I take the SD card out?
Nothing is lost. Downloads that can't reach the card are saved to your phone instead, and Hazel tells you which files went where. Put the card back and new downloads go there again.
Hazel is using a lot of space. What can I clear?
Open More, Temporary Files. It shows what's taking space, such as unfinished downloads, and clears it in a tap. Your saved music and videos are never touched.
How do I move Hazel to a new phone?
Use More, Backup to save your settings, history, queue and sign-ins to a file. Copy the file to your new phone and restore it there. Your music and video files are copied like any other files.
Will my downloads show up in my gallery or music app?
Yes. Files are saved where those apps look, so music appears in your music player and videos in your gallery, usually within a few seconds.
How big will a download be?
The download sheet shows the size of each quality before you start, so you can pick a smaller one to save space.
When something goes wrong
A download suddenly stopped working. What do I do?
Websites change often, and that can break downloads for a while. Open More, Software update and tap Check now. Switching to the Nightly channel gets fixes even sooner.
If it still fails, open the error and copy it into a report on GitHub.
It says I need to sign in, or that the video is private.
Some videos are only visible when signed in. Open More, Cookies, sign in to the site there, and try again. Your sign-in stays on your phone and is only used for that site.
Links take a long time to read.
On a weak connection, open More, Link Reading and choose Thorough. It waits longer and retries more before giving up.
Downloads are slow.
Check that no speed limit is set in More, Downloads. Turning on Refresh slow links there can help when a site slows a download down on purpose.
Where do I report a bug or ask for a feature?
On GitHub Issues. Please read the contributing notes first, and include the error text if there is one.
Privacy and safety
Does Hazel collect any data about me?
No. There's no account, no analytics and no ads. Hazel has no servers of its own; your phone only talks to the sites you download from.
One exception you control: search suggestions, which are off by default, send what you type to Google to suggest searches.
What does incognito do?
Tap the ghost at the top right of the home screen. While it's on, downloads aren't added to your library and links and searches aren't remembered. The files still save as usual.
How do I know my copy is genuine?
Only install Hazel from GitHub Releases or F-Droid. To double check, compare your app's signing certificate with the SHA-256 fingerprint on the home page, for example with the AppVerifier app. If it doesn't match, uninstall it.
Is it legal to download videos?
That depends on where you live and what you download. Only save content you have the right to, and respect each site's terms.
Can other apps send links to Hazel?
Yes. Any app that can share a link can send it to Hazel. For developers, the package name is com.hazel.android.
